The Eurofighter Typhoon is the newest addition to the Royal Air Force's Air Defence fleet, slowly replacing the Tornado F3 in service. Designed to meet the cold war requirement for an air superiority fighter that could defeat the most advanced soviet aircraft, the result is one of the deadliest fighter aircraft in the world. Powered by two Eurojet EJ200 Engines and incorporating advanced fly-by-wire control systems, the Typhoon is extremely fast and agile. Its powerful radar and state-of-the-art avionics allow it to track and engage multiple targets at ranges of up to 100 miles, and an advanced information distribution system allows one Typhoon to detect a target at long range and send that information to another, allowing the firing aircraft to close and engage without switching on its radar. This combined with the Typhoon's low emissions and small radar cross section reduce the likelihood of being detected by enemy radar.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the threat the Typhoon was designed to counter has largely disappeared and the need has arisen for a multi-role aircraft that can eventually replace the RAF's ageing Tornados in both air defence and ground attack roles. For this reason, the first batch of Typhoons is undergoing an upgrade programme to provide them with ground attack capabilities in addition to their fighter role. Future aircraft will be built with this capability from the outset.
The Typhoon is currently equipped to deploy a powerful arsenal of advanced Air-to-Air weaponry including the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) and AIM-132 Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile. In future, the MBDA Meteor will replace the AMRAAM for medium-long range engagements.
The Typhoon is also equipped with an integral 27mm Mauser BK27 Cannon for dogfighting.
Developed by Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain over more than a decade and hampered by a mountain of political and financial troubles, the Typhoon finally entered RAF service in 2003. As of 2010, more than 60 Typhoons are in service with the Royal Air Force with over 150 further aircraft ordered.
